What does Michigan require of a Detroit guard agency?
Michigan licenses the agency, not the individual officer. The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) administers the Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act; LARA states it does not issue an individual security guard license. The agency license is valid for two years, employees must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or GED and no felony, and operating without a license is a felony.
Two rules land locally. A new agency’s application needs the approval of the county sheriff or chief of police and the county prosecuting attorney where its principal office sits, so a Detroit-based company deals with Wayne County offices, and one based in Troy or Southfield with Oakland County. And the agency files employee rosters every quarter, due April 15, July 15, October 15 and January 15; LARA does not process a renewal without the rosters for the prior two years. Uniforms, the 3-by-5-inch shoulder patch and any badge need LARA approval first.

Do Detroit security officers need their own state license?
No. LARA states it does not issue an individual security guard license; it licenses the agency, which is accountable for its employees and files quarterly rosters of them. Armed work depends on the officer being licensed to carry under Michigan law.
Can CGuardPro produce our quarterly roster for LARA?
CGuardPro keeps the officer list with hire dates, status and documents, and you can export it to CSV, Excel or PDF to build the roster due April 15, July 15, October 15 and January 15. It does not submit anything to LARA, so the filing stays with you.
Is there a separate City of Detroit guard license?
We have not found one. What is local is the state’s requirement that a new agency’s application be approved by the county sheriff or chief of police and the county prosecuting attorney where the principal office is.
How do we handle different gate rules for each plant?
Write post orders per gate: badge checks, delivery windows, who may enter and who to call. The officer opens the orders for that gate on the phone, and a change reaches every officer on the post at once.
Can a downtown event crew and our permanent posts share one schedule?
Yes. Create the event as its own site, publish its shifts and fill them from qualified officers, while the weekly schedule of plants and offices stays as it is.
