Iowa security guard software
for agencies licensed under Iowa Code chapter 80A

CGuardPro is security guard management software for Iowa private security agencies: scheduling and relief coverage, GPS and selfie clock-in, QR and NFC guard tours, incident reports, gate and visitor logs, officer ID card tracking and a client portal, with guard, supervisor and client apps for iOS and Android in English and Spanish. It costs $5 per user per month with a 7-day free trial. Iowa licenses security businesses through the Department of Public Safety, so the software keeps the records; the license and the cards stay yours.

What running guards in Iowa actually involves

One state agency licenses the company

Iowa licenses private security businesses through the Department of Public Safety under Iowa Code chapter 80A, alongside private investigation and bail enforcement. The license runs two years, and a change of license type means a new application.

A bond plus proof you can pay a claim

Under section 80A.10 a security-only agency files a surety bond of at least $5,000, or $10,000 if it is licensed for more than one type of business. Section 80A.10A adds proof of financial responsibility for liability claims.

Every officer carries a DPS identification card

Section 80A.7 makes it unlawful to employ someone in the security business unless they have a DPS-issued identification card in their possession. A temporary card is valid 14 days after the application, and fingerprints go with it.

The card belongs to one agency

An ID card is issued under a particular agency’s name and is only valid while working for it, so an officer who works for two companies needs two cards. When someone leaves, the licensee returns the card to the department.

No state training hours for unarmed guards

DPS says there are no education, experience or exam requirements to be licensed; the 12 hours of continuing education apply to private investigation licenses. Your onboarding is the training standard, and clients will ask to see it.

Armed on campus has its own rule

Section 80A.13 requires a security officer who carries a weapon on a college or university campus to file firearm safety training and an employer affidavit with the county sheriff and hold a sheriff-issued permit to carry.

Food processing, ethanol and agribusiness

Meat and food processing plants, ethanol facilities and grain operations put officers on large rural sites with truck gates and shift changes, where a vehicle log and a timestamped tour are the evidence the plant manager needs.

Insurance offices, data centers and two big campuses

Des Moines’s insurance and financial offices, the data center campuses around Des Moines and Council Bluffs, and the University of Iowa and Iowa State bring access-controlled posts where visitor logs and post orders do the work.

Iowa questions, answered plainly

Does each Iowa security officer need a state credential? +

Yes. Under Iowa Code 80A.7 the Department of Public Safety issues an identification card to each employee of a licensed agency, and it is unlawful to employ someone in the security business without one in their possession. The card names your agency and is valid only while they work for you. Confirm current procedures with DPS.

Does Iowa require pre-assignment training hours? +

According to the DPS licensing FAQ, there are no education, experience or exam requirements to be licensed, and the 12 hours of continuing education apply to private investigation licenses. Many clients set their own standard, so CGuardPro keeps training records on each officer that you can show at a bid or an audit.

An officer works for us and another agency. How do we keep the cards straight? +

Store the card issued under your agency on the officer’s record with its number, dates and a photo. CGuardPro warns the office on a window you choose before a dated document expires. It warns rather than blocks and does not check DPS’s records, so returning cards at termination stays with you.

How is overtime calculated for Iowa guards? +

Iowa Workforce Development’s guidance points to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act: time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek, with no state daily overtime. CGuardPro totals hours against a weekly threshold so you see overtime coming while you build the schedule, and approved hours can go to Gusto as time sheets.

Our posts are rural plants with poor signal. Will the app work? +

Incident reports, visitor entries and the start and end of a guard tour queue on the phone and sync when the connection returns. Clock-in with GPS and a selfie needs a live connection. The guard app is available in English and Spanish, and it is $5 per user per month with a 7-day free trial.

Bring one plant gate or one office tower and a week of posts, and we will set it up the way you run it.
